Our Impact

Since our programs began in early 2022, we have seen significant successes at the residential center, regional, and national levels, with these successes being recognised nationally by the Tanzanian government.

Center-Level Successes

During 2022 and 2023, the capacity-building team provided a range of trainings for Coalition members. These trainings focused on strengthening the internal capacity of organizations, exploring topics such as management structure, financial capabilities, and improving quality of care. Five champion organisations were selected for additional support, due to their eagerness to move toward family-first models. These centers have had enormous success with implementing family support programs, and have begun to reunify over 1/3 of the children in their care! All this has been achieved by training, with no transfer of funds to partners.

Regional/National Successes

During 2022 and 2023, we continued to expand our network with like-minded organizations. In total, we visited 10 new childcare organizations and hosted 11 prospective partners at our site. Member organizations are now up to over 50. We also engaged with national and international level NGO's including REPSSI, TFFT, Le Solstice, and HakiElimu. We continue to work closely with the Department of Social Welfare to ensure our member organisations are operating according to best practices. We're also in the process of finalizing a letter of support from the Tanzanian government for the Coalition project.

We are participating in a study conducted by Citizens4Change to analyze the outcomes of children who grow up in alternative care settings. We have started the network mapping process, which will result in the creation of a database of OVC service providers. This database will be available to the general public, Social Welfare, and all Tanzanian nonprofits as a resource for responding to vulnerable children in need. The Department of Social Welfare has expressed their desire and excitement about the creation of this tool.
